Slow fashion: what it is and why you really have to do something with it as a designer?

In slow fashion - the alternative to fast fashion - sustainability is the primary topic. But what exactly does slow fashion mean? And what are the differences between slow and fast fashion?

We answer these questions and also explain why it is important that clothing designers respond to this.

What is slow fashion?

Slow fashion means that you handle clothing in a more conscious, holistic way. You do not only look at the item of clothing in front of you, but you also ask yourself: where do these items of clothing come from? Who made them? And what journey did they take before entering the store?

Sustainability is an important aspect here at, because you also think about how you will handle the clothing piece in the future and whether you will wear it for a long time.

The quality promise of slow fashion

Sustainable fashion is made from high-quality fabrics that last a long time. The slow fashion meaning is therefore clothing of excellent quality, where both the maker and the buyer of the clothing can count on a fair price. This also includes an environmentally friendly production process.

Slow fashion versus fast fashion

Slow fashion brands and fast fashion brands are completely the opposite of each other. Fast fashion is made in large quantities, is very trend-sensitive and very cheap. Good quality is less important. Therefore it stands for today's society in which mass consumption is the norm. Slow fashion is about quality, timeless designs, fair production and sustainability.

Fast fashion is being made in the cheapest possible way. The lower the costs of having the clothing made, the higher the profit. Then the price of the product can be made even lower and more people will buy the clothing. This way, more money ends up with the owners of the fashion labels, which is not good for both the local employees and the environment. People like to wear something new and prefer to spend as little as possible for it. The shorter the lifespan of clothing is not seen as a problem. However, it is not very sustainable fashion.

The consequences of more slow fashion

By choosing slow fashion you really make an impact!

The consequences are:

  • Reduce your ecological footprint in the production of clothes
  • Clothes that have been made with care and are of excellent quality
  • Clothes that, partly due to the improved quality, have a long lifespan
  • Less low prices
  • Fair working conditions for the makers of the clothes
  • Using sustainable fabrics to make sustainable fashion.
